Cathedral Coins was opened in 1987 by Iain Roberts, a former gallery curator who wanted to sell what he actually collected. The shop has been in the same modest premises on Cathedral Street ever since — three rooms of cabinets, one bell on the door, and a kettle that has, on occasion, kept buyers in the shop longer than they had intended.
We deal exclusively in pieces we'd be happy to own ourselves. That means we say no to a lot of consignments. It also means our catalogue is shorter than our peers' — and, we hope, more interesting.
"They told me my grandfather's medal was nothing special. Iain knew exactly which regiment, which campaign, and what I should not let it leave the family for."— Margaret D., Pitlochry
